Overview

Gift of Hope is proud to serve as the federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) that coordinates organ and tissue donation and provides compassionate service to families of donors in the northern three-quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana.

 

Since our inception in 1986, we have coordinated donations that have saved the lives of more than 23,000 organ transplant recipients, and improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of tissue transplant recipients. As one of 58 organ procurement organizations that make up the nation’s organ donation system, we work with 183 hospitals in our donation service area.

Provides emergency and non-emergency ground transportation and assists with property maintenance and building security

Compensation range for this position is $18.42 - $20.50 per hour

Shift: 4:00PM to Midnight

Responsibilities

The following essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Support Gift of Hope’s mission, vision, and values; adhere to its policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position
  • Work assigned schedule to provide 24-hour department coverage
  • Provide emergency and non-emergency ground transportation for organ and tissue recovery departments including human organs, blood and tissue samples, tissue team, and organ department staff, and external organ procurement teams
  • Perform property related duties such as:
    • Conduct building security and safety tours
    • Escort employees to personal vehicles
    • Light bulb replacement
    • Restock bathroom and lunchroom supplies
    • Monitor salt level in water softener
    • Monitor alarm panel for generator
    • Some landscaping duties
    • Trash removal
    • Maintenance of exercise equipment
    • Snow removal
    • Fire extinguisher inspections
    • Flush drains
    • Monitor alarm panel for deionized water tank
  • Keep all Gift of Hope vehicles clean and in proper working condition; report problems immediately to the supervisor
  • Drive vehicles to commercial garage for periodic servicing
  • Complete and submit a daily Vehicle Maintenance Checklist for each vehicle
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Training Required

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

 

Experience and Skills Required

The following indicates the minimum skills and experience required to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Attention to detail
  • Must be at least 25 years of age
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with others
  • Ability to learn all property and security related duties

  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel and walk to perform job duties
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to drive Gift of Hope vehicles to perform job duties
  • Ability to respond to pages within 10 minutes when working on call
  • Ability to use personal cell phone for business purposes

 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that will be encountered by an employee while performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Normal office environment
  • Work weekends and other hours outside regular office hours
  • Driving Gift of Hope vehicles approximately 7-8 hours per trip for trips within Gift of Hope’s service area (northern 2/3 of Illinois and Lake County, Indiana)
  • Some exposure to adverse weather
  • Some exposure to adverse road conditions
  • Carry a personal cell phone to be accessible outside regular business hours
