Overview

Gift of Hope is proud to serve as the federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) that coordinates organ and tissue donation and provides compassionate service to families of donors in the northern three-quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana.

 

Since our inception in 1986, we have coordinated donations that have saved the lives of more than 23,000 organ transplant recipients, and improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of tissue transplant recipients. As one of 58 organ procurement organizations that make up the nation’s organ donation system, we work with 183 hospitals in our donation service area.

 

This position responsible for developing and maintaining Gift of Hope's relationships with key hospital leadership staff in assigned territory to implement hospital programs and policies that promote organ and tissue donation; Conducts on-site assessment and evaluation of potential organ donors, follows referrals in an assigned region.

 

Compensation range for this position is  $74,797-$84,147  annually

Responsibilities

    • Support Gift of Hope’s mission, vision and values; adhere to its policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
    • Maintain Hospital Development responsibilities for assigned hospitals.
    • Function as an expert resource within the hospital on all aspects of organ and tissue donation
    • Work with hospital administration to create effective policies and procedures to support and improve organ and tissue donation.
    • Develop and implement plans to optimize hospital performance, including, but not limited to, an annual Hospital Plan
    • Determine each hospital’s unique working environment and organizational structure.
    • Evaluate process, progress and effectiveness of interactions and set new goals to advance program development and relationships.
    • Participates and provides leadership in quality improvement projects including those that expand beyond Gift of Hope workflows and include referring clinical workflows and metrics.
    • Manages quality improvement projects with referring hospitals to increase donation rates and improve processes.
    • Engage with stakeholders, setting expectations to ensure data resources include accurate, complete, and insightful data.  Prepare written analysis of key donation outcomes.
    • Conduct monthly medical record review of missed opportunities for donation.
    • Reviews key process metrics, including referring hospital feedback, donor family feedback, after action review feedback, etc. for the purposes of identifying and leading improvement initiatives.
    • Develop solutions to issues that impede the donation process.
    • Facilitate hospital programs and committees that influence organ and tissue donation.
    • Develop and present educational programs on all aspects of the donation process for hospital staff.
    • Maintain Organ/Tissue responsibilities.
    • Meet departmental deadlines for assigned projects, medical record review, hospital reporting, documentation of hospital interactions Organ/Tissue Responsibilities
    • Supports the referral management process by completing onsite evaluation of potential organ donors within assigned hospital territory.
    • Responsible for managing organ referrals, obtaining clinical and family information to determine medical suitability.
    • Create a plan for organ referrals including further needs once onsite staff involved.
    • Support hospital staff through the referral process and provide additional education and information surrounding the donation process.
    • Assist hospital staff in identifying issues related to the donation process and, in collaboration, create a plan of action.
    • Ensure accurate, clear clinical documentation according to current policies and procedures; identify, document, and communicate essential clinical information to associated Gift of Hope staff.
    • Operate as lead of a Hospital Development project-based initiative and/or team.
    • Ensure hospital information is shared regularly among the team in order to provide consistent coverage and referral/case support
    • Work with the team on strategies to achieve referral, approach and authorization goals
    • Develop strategies to increase timely referrals
    • Promote hospital culture that supports moving a referral to an approach and creates an environment that supports the family donation decision
    • Leverage individual team member strengths to meet these objectives
    • Assist team in implementing best practice protocols
    • Assist department managers with special projects, as needed, including but not limited to referral management coordination
    • Function as preceptor for new hires, as needed; work with Hospital Development Training Coordinator to develop shadowing schedule for new Donation Coordinators; document shadowing experiences for upload to the learning management system (LMS)
    • Other duties as assigned

    • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, healthcare administration or a related field, or equivalent work experience

     

    Experience and Skills Required

    • 3 years of experience as a Donation Coordinator
    • Demonstrated leadership skills
    • Ability to speak persuasively and influence senior level hospital staff
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data
    • Ability to effectively communicate policies, procedures and regulations
    • Ability to function with a high degree of autonomy
    • Ability to creatively address the needs of hospitals, family members and Gift of Hope
    • Ability to learn and understand hospital administrative and clinical functions
    • Ability to travel to hospitals within assigned service area
