  • Overview

    A full-time, 40-hour, on-call position comprised of 3 12-hour shifts. This role requires the employee to be available on nights, weekends and holidays (as agreed upon by the department and the supervisor) to meet organizational needs and ensure proper coverage. 

     

    The primary function of the Donation Specialist is to assess clinical potential for donation, assess family process, collaborate with hospital care team to ensure best possible experience for all stakeholders, and advocate for donation with the legal next-of-kin of donors and potential donors, at the time of death and while considering end-of-life decision-making.

     

    Responsibilities

    Organ On-sites:

    • Respond to referral dispatches within established timeframe
    • Thoroughly read and adhere to dispatch instructions, including HD attachments/special instructions and policy information
    • Properly access hospital EMR
    • Effectively and efficiently gather patient clinical and social/emotional information for evaluation purposes
    • Determine LNOK and/or decision maker
    • Properly document all relevant information
    • Coordinate and conduct effective Patient Care Conferences (PCC) with internal and external stakeholders
    • Facilitate necessary testing and services

    Approaches

    • Develop rapport with patients’ family
    • Compassionately provide factual information about the benefits of donation
    • Advocate for donation
    • Counsel families through donation process

    Authorization

    • Obtain informed consent using proper GOH documentation/forms
    • Communicate with ME/Coroner as required
    • Make Medical Record Q/A corrections in timely fashion as needed

    Family Support

    • Be patient, respectful, and compassionate with family’s bereavement and decision making processes
    • Establish appropriate psycho-social boundaries
    • Provide appropriate clinical and technical support before, during, and after DBD/DCD process
    • Provide timely follow-up information regarding outcome during the case and post-op

    Hospital Development

    • Establish and maintain meaningful relationships with hospital staff
    • Provide training and education on critical and intensive care units
    • Conduct paper rounds where appropriate
    • Attend internal and external hospital debriefs

    Qualifications

     

    Education and Training Required

    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in an Allied Healthcare field, business administration, education, advocacy, or related field; or equivalent work experience (a minimum of five years experience in consulting, sales, fundraising, advocacy)

    • Ability to travel to Itasca office for meetings and trainings weekly, on off-call days, as needed
    • Ability to work in a hospital environment, particularly emergency departments, critical care units, and intensive care units
    • Ability to work outside normal business hours to respond to case issues or problems
    • Ability to effectively convey information to co-workers, hospital staff, and potential donor families
    • Ability to review potential donor medical charts
    • Ability to remain mentally and emotionally sharp despite long hours
    • Ability to sit for long periods of time
    • Ability to stand for 90 plus minutes
    • Comfort being present at the time of death in the ICU and operating room setting
