Overview

The Community Affairs Specialist assists the Manager of Community Affairs in developing, coordinating and maintaining relationships within the DSA, including outreach to educational, religious, civic and social organizations to increase organ and tissue donation.

Responsibilities

The following essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Support Gift of Hope’s mission, vision, and values; adhere to its policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position
  • In conjunction with Volunteer Coordinator, coordinate a volunteer network of advocates for organ and tissue donation to participate in programs and public speaking opportunities
  • Monitor and analyze effectiveness of our volunteers
  • Develop and maintain relationships with select community, educational, religious, civic and social organizations to increase awareness of, and support for, organ and tissue donation
  • Develop and implement special events and programs to increase overall public awareness and increase registration rates in the African-American and other selected community; foster participation by task force members and Gift of Hope staff
  • Identify new opportunities for awareness within selected, targeted communities
  • Contribute to the monthly newsletter, focusing content as it relates to area of expertise; assist in maintaining information on Gift of Hope websites
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Training Required

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English, or a related field, or equivalent work experience

Experience and Skills Required

 

 

  • Three years’ related experience in community relations or not-for-profit public relations, preferably in a healthcare environment
  • Experience coordinating volunteer programs
  • Experience developing community-based programs and events
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to influence support for organ and tissue donation
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Ability to drive personal auto to various community locations within the service area to perform job functions
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to lift and move 30 pounds
